PROCESS

FINDING THE PROBLEM
BACKGROUND

33-50% of all food produced globally is never eaten

more than 50% of food waste takes place in our homes
HYPOTHESIS
How might we help people to better track the food they purchase in order to solve the food waste problem?
PRODUCT & MARKETING ANALYSIS
With the development of environmental protection regulations and increased awareness of protection, 81% of consumers believe that environmental improvement projects are very important. This is mainly manifested as diligence and frugality and reduce loss and waste.
Research shows that 84% of Americans are more willing to go to the supermarket to shop for food in person. However, by observing the food consumption process of local users in the United States, there are a large number of cases where they forget the expiration date of the food or forget the purchase. Therefore, an app that tracks food purchase records can not only replace the use of paper receipts, but also help users reduce food waste and avoid excessive consumption.
USER RESEARCH
I conduct surveys and interviews by asking people if they are willing to go to the market for food shopping in person to understand their experience in food shopping and determine what kind of people will become my potential users. Based on survey and interview statistics, I created user personas and summarized the main pain points in three stages of the process of food shopping.
Statistics by Age And Gender
The target user age range is 18-40
The main users are female

DEFINING THE PROBLEM
DESIGN GOAL
To sum up, because there is no habits of recording consumptions, users often forget the food they have purchased, which results in repeated or multiple consumption. And due to the negligence and lack of records of the purchased food, it ultimately led to the consequences of food waste. Therefore, the purpose of this design is to provide an easy-to-use and fast way to help users better record and track purchased products to solve the problem of food waste.
Establish a smooth and convenient user experience process from buying food to checking food, so users will not give up use because of the cumbersome process
Smooth and efficient
Easy to use
Establish simple and easy-to-use process steps to reduce user difficulty in operation
Make recording no longer a boring thing, cultivate good food shopping habits
Encourage and cultivate habits
DEFINE MVP FEATURES
01
Bind bank card or third-party payment method
04
Available to check past purchase records
02
The food purchase information is directly transferred to the app and an electronic receipt is generated
05
A reminder will be sent to your phone when the food has almost expired
03
The purchased food will be entered into different categories according to the expiration date

VISUALS
UI DISPLAY
01
HOME PAGE
The homepage shows three categories of food: the green represents fresh food, the red represents food that is about to expire, and the blue represents undated food. Slogans have been added at the top of the page to encourage users to improve environmental and food waste awareness.

02
FOOD ITEMS LIST
The food items will be presented to the user in the form of a list, which is convenient for the user to view individually. Each column will provide the name of the food and the expiration date. I used "I ate it" instead of "Delete" to increase the user engagements.
03
TRACKING RECEIPTS
Users can click on the date in the calendar above to check the records of that day. There will be a red dot representing newly added purchases.

04
ALMOST EXPIRED FOOD NOTIFICATIONS
A reminder will be sent to your phone when the food is about to expire to remind users to eat as soon as possible. The user can directly select the "I ate!" and "Remind me tomorrow" commands on the phone lock screen.
UX VIDEO PRESENTATION
USABILITY TESTS & REFLECTION
For the final usability test on multiple users, most of the feedback received was positive. But at the same time I received some suggestions worth considering.
"It's easy to get started, the steps are relatively simple and smooth."——Yang

“The notification function is helpful."——Modi

“For the main page, how about swap the position of the almost expired food and the position of fresh food, so that it will remind me to eat the food that is about to expire?"——Diana

REFLECTION
This topic gave me a chance to continuously think about how to integrate the topic of climate design and sustainable thoughts into my daily design. Through many surveys and interviews, I have gained a new perspective on environmental protection, but the interface still needs to be continuously optimized. My next step is to add a rewarding mechanism to encourage users to adopt food protection behaviors.
